BEHIND THE SOUND

We Are Courage

On April 21, we celebrate courage. PlanIt Sound is honoured to be the event management team once again for the Glenrose's award-winning Courage Gala (see article below). The custom decor and art installation concepts will be led by our ever-so-talented Christina Ignacio-Deines of I-D Bohemia, and will amount to over 1,000 logged hours of creative production from the hard working team of nearly 80 volunteers coordinated by PlanIt Sound and the Glenrose. The campaign video showcases an acoustic remix of last year's anthem co-written and performed by Lia Cole, and will feature over 15 Glenrose ambassadors and team members emphatically singing along to this year's tagline: #WeAreCourage.

Building off of this year's campaign video shoot, we created mini video vignettes to be released leading into the event. The brainchild of Trina Johnson from the Glenrose, the creative video tools went well beyond all of our expectations and have been extremely well-received. Thanks to the hard work from the Glenrose team, the event has been sold out yet again, well in advance of the event date. Check out the teaser below, and watch all the vignettes in our Creative Corner. A special shout out goes to our talented cousin, Paul Princen for the spoken word verse in the Patient Video Vignette. We would also like to give the warmest welcome to the uber talented Laura Tailleur, our newest Event Manager as we continue to grow and scale. We are truly grateful and fortunate to have you on the PlanIt team.

Ice is back, and looks like he jumped straight out of the 90's and onto the stage. He hasn't aged a bit. Some of the other members of the I Love the 90's Tour, however, did manage to show some signs of living the fast life. Boy did we enjoy teleporting back to 1990 along with the thousands of other screaming 30-something year old parents. Vanilla Ice and Salt N Peppa put on incredible performances of classic hits, Vanilla even managed to sneak in some covers of new hits to fill out his on-stage repertoire. We have to thank Shawn and the crew at Kinsmen Club of Edmonton for hooking up an unforgettable VIP on stage and backstage experience. Congratulations on the hugely successful event! You can see some of this backstage footage in this month's Behind the Sound. Unfortunately, some of the footage had to be deleted from public viewing, you'll have to ask us about that one in person!

Working with the Glenrose team helping showcase the incredible stories of their ambassadors is one of the reasons we do what we do at PlanIt Sound. It's what gives us a sense of pride and inspiration in both business, and in life. It's even that much more gratifying to to see our client receive the deserving honour of "Best Fundraiser 2016" for Courage Gala at the Edmonton Event Awards! Congratulations to Trina, Wendy, Louise, Lindsay, and the entire team at the Glenrose, and thank you for the opportunity to work together on Courage Gala.

LIA COLE LAUNCHES MUSIC VIDEO WORLDWIDE

6 years ago, I was walking through Churchill Square and was stopped dead in my tracks.  Standing on the stage behind a guitar that seemed 3 sizes too big, was a young artist doing her now well-known rendition of "Billy Jean" by the great Michael Jackson.  Way back then at age 12, she owned that stage, and that crowd, even if the crowd consisted solely of her parents and a single cousin.  Looking around for someone to leave my business card with, I saw a man holding a camcorder.  Bingo, it had to be her father.  I handed them my card, and little did we know, that was the onset of a journey to help one day realize her vision of being a legit super star.  Lia Cole was born.

Today, October 18, 8 PM (MST), is the global release of "You Lost Me" Acoustic Video by Lia Cole.  We also flip the switch on her new website, and a freshly developed brand package we have been piecing together over the last 5 months.  We invite you to tune into the Live Facebook Video Release right now by clicking on the link below.  If you missed the live release, the permanent video will be made available at the same link.

PLANiT CLOSES ITS DOORS

Well, sort of.  We're closing our front doors, and letting you in through the back for an exclusive "behind the scenes" peek into our projects at PlanIt Sound.  Welcome to the launch of "Behind the Sound".  We wanted to find a cool new way to thank our loyal subscribers and followers, so we decided to share videos, photos and insight into our particular world of audio branding, video branding, and special event management.  Everybody likes peeking into the front windows of other people's houses, right?  Rowena, our COO, certainly does.

In our pilot episode of "Behind the Sound", we take you behind the scenes of "Uniquely Me", the 5th Annual Fashion Show Fundraiser of Edmonton Down Syndrome Society. You'll see special messages from our Down syndrome models like the man Joey Moss himself, media celebrities like CTV's Josh Classen, Jordan Hertner, Robbie Williams, Corey Edel, Edmonton Oiler Andrew Ference, Edmonton Eskimos D'Anthony Batiste and Tony Washington, and our hard working volunteers and core team.  All the footage you see is shot and edited on an iPhone 6 Plus, sneaking you into places where no broadcast camera has been before.

5 years ago we got a call from a little organization called United Way.  They had a new tagline, "Change Starts Here", and they wanted a rap song.  Little did we know that rap song would soon become the unprecedented National Campaign Video for United Ways across Canada.  Little did we know that together, we would build a one-of-a-kind poverty awareness talent competition, called My United Way Voice.  Little did we know that one day soon, we would help coordinate:

Mayor Don Iveson on a drum machine that RUN DMC used to produce their entire hit record, First Lady and United Way Campaign Cabinet Co-Chair Sarah Chan on the Melodica keyboard, CTV's Josh Classen rapping on da mic, the mind-blowing singing of Paul Woida and Julia Nicholson, the Logan Alexis First Nations singers and drummers, and the collaboration of over 15 musicians and singers coming together to record and perform "We Get Back Up" for this year's United Way campaign video.

'Nuff said.  Check this out.

Top 5 Voices Against Poverty Announced Today - Vote Now!

TOP 5 VOICES AGAINST POVERTY ANNOUNCED TODAY
When we partnered with United Way Alberta Capital Region and Hot 107 for the first ever My United Way Voice contest, we knew we were on to something special. It is the age-old story of the underdog, sharing their voice against poverty, highlighted through the universal power of music and melody.  We hoped to tap into the plethora of talent we knew existed in the region, however, the number and quality of the submissions we received surpassed any of our expectations by a long shot. We had a great problem on our hands: how on earth do we whittle this down to our Top 5?

By following the careful criteria, our selection committee successfully got through the very difficult and lengthy task of choosing, and finally agreeing upon just five finalists.  Now, the power is in the hands of the community.  It is all up to YOU.

Vote! Vote! Vote!  And encourage others to vote! You can vote for your favourite artists once a day until contest polls close on January 19, 2015.  Don’t forget to share your favourites, using the hashtag #myUWvoice, and ask others to vote, too!  Then, the winner will be revealed at United Way’s Annual Red Tie Gala on March 5, 2015.

Congratulations to our Top 5 Finalists (in alphabetical order):
Emilie Louise, Julia Nicholson, Rayne, Rellik and Toxsic!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY FESTIVAL OF TREES!
Yes, it's snowing outside, and the roads are treacherous.  BUT, Christmas is near, and you can begin by celebrating the very special 30th Anniversary for Festival of Trees!  Once the Halloween decorations go down, COO Rowena Cui goes straight into Christmas crazy mode.  You can only imagine the joy over at the PlanIt Sound Inc. offices when we had the opportunity to work with Donna and the rest of the wonderful team at Festival of Trees on their anniversary music video!

The "Make Your Season Bright" Music Video features the vocals of the oh-so-talented Olivia Wik, as well as the killer dance moves performed by the entire volunteer team.  When you remix a Christmas classic, get over 40 passionate volunteers into a warehouse and choreograph them into the shape of a huge Christmas tree, well boundless fun is about to ensue.  And it did.  Thank you so much to all the volunteers for working year-round, bringing Christmas to the greater Edmonton and area.  It was a pleasure and honour to work together on this project.

The fun Christmas festivities kicked off with the Gala Evening and "Make Your Season Bright" Music Video Premiere last Wednesday, Nov. 26, with events happening at the Shaw Conference Centre through to this Sunday, Nov. 30, 2014.  Be sure to bring the entire family down for some Christmas fun.

Oct 2014 - Community Wide Contest Searches for Voices Against Poverty

COMMUNITY WIDE CONTEST SEARCHES FOR VOICES AGAINST POVERTY
Back in 2002 I was pulling into the street of my home in my red Honda Prelude, when my friends and I noticed what looked to be a down and out shirtless man running up and down the street.  It was zero degrees outside.  As I pulled up, I realized that it was a 16 year old at-risk youth named Randy.  Rowena and I had worked 1 on 1 with Randy previously for close to 2 years.  He and his family had experienced extreme hardships and challenges living in poverty, living with mental illness, and battling drug addictions.  While working with Randy, Rowena and I had started a program called Soundz of Youth.  Through music, we kept at-risk youth off the streets, and brought them into the recording studio to share their experiences in meaningful and creative ways: through writing and recording their own songs. The recording studio became a safe haven for youth to have a voice, and share their stories of poverty to possibility.  At the end of each session, youth would proudly leave with their very own professionally produced CD to play for all their friends.

Randy had recently got out of jail and was placed  in another group home in Sherwood Park. He ran all the way from Sherwood Park, to my home recording studio at the time in Castledowns North Edmonton, just to "spit some new rhymes for me".  In that very moment, I realized the impact the power of music had made on this impressionable young man.  To this day, seeing the faces of these youth light up in the studio are the most fondest memories of working front line in Human Services.

Thanks to youth like Randy, "excited" cannot begin to describe how passionate we are to have launched the first ever search for the My United Way Voice against poverty.

We are honoured and grateful to have partnered with United Way of the Alberta Capital Region and HOT 107 on the first ever My United Way Voice contest.  On October 2nd we held a press conference at the PlanIt Sound Inc offices/studio amongst a room full of media and industry leaders launching the brand new contest to search for voices against poverty.  Spoken word artists, singers and rappers from across the Capital Region are being called on to submit a video of themselves singing a catchy hook, spitting rhymes or dropping and inspirational verse using the poverty theme.

The winner - decided by online community vote - will receive a prize package valued at $5,000 that includes professional coaching, studio recording time and a live performance in front of over 700 community leaders and supporters at United Way's annual campaign wrap-up, the Red Tie Gala on March 5, 2015.

The contest encourages original work by local artists, but can also be a cover tune that connects with the issue.  The goal of the project is to find the best voice against poverty and offer a showcase for the performance. Now open, the submission deadline is November 21, 2014. The top 5 submissions will be announced at myunitedwayvoice.ca on November 28, 2014 and then the contest will open to the community for online voting that will close on January 19, 2015.

Aug 2014 - Can We Still Be Besties?

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
In this month's Newsflash: We ask to stay remain your bestie, we gear up for the 3rd Annual Uniquely Me Fashion Show & Fundraiser Gala with EDSS, and we release the 3rd music video in the Southside Mitsubishi trilogy called Must Be A Mirage! Email not displaying correctly?

CAN WE STILL BE BESTIES?
In elementary school, my best friend was Mark Strickland.  We were both short, shared the same sense of humour, and if I may say so myself, we were both gosh darn cute.  Every year, we would exchange one shoe with each other from our brand new "indoor pair" of school shoes so that everyone could be reminded that we were best friends.  We walked to school together, we listened to the same music, and we even liked the same girls.

A couple years ago, I found a note written for Mark in grade 6 that for some reason or another my parents had kept.  It read something like this: "Dear Mark, I know you are my best friend, but every time I say I like a girl, you end up liking her too, and I don't like that.  I don't want to be best friends anymore."

Things were so simple then.  Now, to send all of you, our Newsflash subscribers, a simple note containing a friendly story, some helpful marketing and advertising tips, and share some of our most imaginative creative to keep you up to date with our company, we have to worry about the rules and legislation of Canada's Anti-Spam Policy.

If you are included in this email it is because you are a friend, client, or someone we have had the pleasure of meeting in person.  We kindly hope that we may continue this relationship together.  If you have received this email in error, or you just "don't like that" and "don't want to be friends anymore", then please feel free to unsubscribe at the bottom of this email.  The unsubscribe button will be available at all times as per the legislation, but let's stay together.

With the above post, we have also completed the brand new PLANiT-SPAM Act of 2014 "CYA" (Cover Your Ass).

SPAM IS DELICIOUS THOUGH.

MUST BE A MIRAGE!
And now, for round 3 of the Southside Mitsubishi saga, we saved the best for last.  The brand new music video, "Must Be A Mirage", is a glorious throwback to the 80's, where RUN DMC wore Adidas track suits with the Shell Toes, and women wore hot pink leggings and crimped their hair.  Our talented young hip-hop artist, Yak Dollaz, drives around the southside streets in his stunning Mitsubishi Mirage which he got for under 10k., brand new.  Yes, this vehicle is under 10K, brand new.  The problem is, Yak keeps  running into a mirage of his own, where the mirage of a beautiful young woman played by the lovely Stephanie Steeves, keeps disappearing and transforming into our humble Southside Mitsu sales staff playing himself, Sebastian Marriott.  Yak refuses to fall for the mirage a third time by the end of the video, and the real Sebastian Marriott finds himself in for a great surprise.

Big shout out once again to Mike and the whole Southside Mitsu team for working with us on such fun creative.  Tough day at the office, this was.

May 2014 - "Worst Song Ever" Goes Viral!

"THE WORST SONG EVER" GOES VIRAL!
We've all been online and watched that video everyone was talking about: Westjet Christmas Miracle, Dog talks to owner about food, or our personal favorite, Baby Panda Sneezes. While we do know that people love watching videos about babies and pets, it is impossible to guarantee that the video you post on YouTube will go viral.

So what's the formula? Well we took a hard hitting rap beat, some clever and subtle lyricism promoting the Mitsubishi RVR, and had a white guy in his 40's wearing a cheesy sales suit try his best to rap. The results were magical, and we were lucky enough to enter the viral circle of laughs with our Southside Mitsubishi song and video, "We Rep the Southside".  What has been dubbed as "The Worst Song Ever" on YouTube  managed to make popular websites like, Global News, Auto Blog Canada, Break.com, Ebaumsworld, Auto Guide and Autoline Daily combining at over 1.2 million online hits and counting. Big shout out goes to Mike and the team at Southside Mitsu for not only working with us on this creative, but also doing a spectacular job marketing the music video and getting it out there.

This month, we are proud to launch the follow up to this video, called "MitsuBeastley". Join our Ranger played by Donovan Workun on a journey by the campfire, where he shares with the Southside Mitsu Team his story about a mythical creature that lives on the Southside.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY E4C!
This year, we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of E4C's School Lunch Program! Hearing from "the experts" themselves, the kids, we had a wonderful time shooting a super cute and fun video in celebration of a program that has become a staple in our community. We were honoured to collaborate with David, Manisha, Arlene, Leanne and the whole team at E4C. Congratulations, and thank you for letting us be a small part of his huge milestone!

Bigger Is Better

BE THE SUPERMAN OF MARKETING
Who's bigger and badder than Superman? Nobody, that's who. Read further and discover how you could be the Superman of Marketing by learning from the man himself:

Fly High: Don't be constrained by any ground rules that may limit your creativity. So that's not how people in your industry typically market or advertise?  Perfect. Even the sky is not the limit.
X-Ray Vision: Things that are in plain view are just that, plain. Use your X-ray vision to dig deeper. Look past the surface of your market, look straight through obstacles, and gain a deeper level of understanding of who your audience truly is.
Super Human Strength: Persistence takes strength, and success takes much failure. Accept failure simply as being another step closer to success, a task not for the weak.
Super Human Speed: Wait for no one, wait for nothing. Procrastination only means that someone has already accomplished what you wanted yesterday. Wake up early, grind hard, and play hard.
Know You Alter Ego: We all wear various hats throughout the day. Know when it is the right time to be Clark Kent, and when it is the right time to suit up, and understand the difference. Either way, both require a memorable look and tone.
UP, UP AND AWAY!

New Year, New Baby, New Website.

NEW YEAR, NEW BABY, NEW WEBSITE.
Happy, Happy New Year to all our wonderful clients, friends, and family!  We hope your holiday season was filled with love ones and calories just like ours was. We took December off from our monthly Newsflash, but since you were all so busy with Christmas cheer and family parties, you wouldn't have read it anyway, right?

The real reason for being offline in December, is that on November 23, 2013, we began one of the most amazing journeys of our lives.  PlanIt Sound Inc. put business aside for just the moment (or the next 20 years, depending on how you look at it), and welcomed a healthy and beautiful 10 lb baby boy to the world.  Yes, 10 lbs.  We named him Red Jameson Cui.  We wanted something bold and creative, just like we would raise him to be, and Rowena came up with Red.  We loved it instantly and agreed that if he wanted to rap like Daddy, he had a cool rap name ready to rock.  We wanted something classic to stand the test of time, and we came up with Jameson.  After all, he is the son of James (which is the "J" in R.J.).  This way, he also had a name set to take over any boardroom as the president of the next Apple empire, or become the first Filipino - Canadian Wolf of Wall Street, should he want that.

Life in 2013 has treated us so well, and we feel so blessed and ecstatic to take on 2014 with a brand new perspective.  May you achieve all your resolutions and more, or at least cover some of the missed ones from 2013.  May you have the most creative year ever.  Let us shake our heads outside of the box, break barriers, and push envelopes like never before.

OK, BACK TO BUSINESS.

NATIONAL CHILD DAY!
We couldn't have scripted a better creative to showcase in this month's Newsflash, than to re-cap the celebration of National Child Day this past November 20, 2013 with a cool new song and music video!  Originally written by our talented friend Maigan Van Der Giessen, this PlanIt Sound remix tells the story of many young children who feel they are simply not heard.  In recognition of the UN Declaration on the Rights of the Child, it is the perfect time for young Canadians to express themselves and shape their own future. It was amazing working with Randy, Arlene and the entire team at Office of the Child and Youth Advocate on this creative project.  A huge shout out goes to the OCYA team for bringing us on board and allowing us to create an anthem for such an integral message for our youth, children, and adults alike.

This was supposed to be Red's first event, but since he arrived 8 days late with 42 hours of labour, he apparently had prior engagements.

Don Iveson in the Booth

PLANIT POLITICS: DON IVESON IN THE BOOTH
Cool as ever, throwing in the occasional beat box to loosen up his vocals, Edmonton's new Mayor, Don Iveson, was every bit as experienced, intelligent, kind and tall as you'd expect him to be.  A giant stood before us, in more ways than one.

It was extremely humbling to sit with such great creative thinkers, as they
strategically revised scripts designed to strike notes of pride in the hearts and minds of Edmontonians.  A warm thank you goes out to Don, a marketing maverick having chaired a multimillion dollar advertising services company, along with his beautiful and passionate wife Sarah who also owns her own business and blog, our friend Ryan from Red the Agency and recent President of the Advertising Club of Edmonton (thank you for thinking of us for this project), Don's campaign manager Chris, and the entire campaign team who all worked collaboratively to help achieve the custom creative radio spots for Don's campaign.

We feel so greatly privileged to have exclusively produced Don's custom audio brand to help accentuate the positive, uplifting vibe of the radio campaign.  From there, all we had to do was
make sure we pushed the right buttons to capture Don's well versed voice over.  We did fine, despite the power going out in our building mid-session for the longest 8 minutes of our lives.

THE AUTHENTIC VOICE FOR WARD 12
Continuing on with our creative career in politics, we were privileged and honoured to work with yet another landslide winner in this year's municipal election in Edmonton, Councillor Amarjeet Sohi: the Authentic Voice For Ward 12.

With Sohi's superhero-like crime fighting, and dedication to Edmonton's infrastructure, transportation and inclusive community, there was no shortage of
eager testimonials and supporters for his campaign video.  Working closely and collaboratively with Amarjeet, Jim and the entire campaign team, it was a seamless process resulting in an engaging and inspiring video, creating a buzz of social sharing leading up to voting day on October 21st.  Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of your movement, and congratulations on a huge win for both you, ward 12, and Edmontonians!

YOU'LL NEVER WANT TO LEAVE.
When we met with General Sales Manager Farid at Lexus South Pointe, the first thing we noticed were all the guests hanging around the dealership.  Well, with a nail and hand massage spa, virtual driving range, rooftop patio, and state of the art massage chairs in the waiting lounge with iPads and Wi-Fi, why would you ever want to leave?

Our meeting with Farid became the inspiration for the creative concept of their brand new TV commercials, "You'll never want to leave".  It was such a pleasure working in such a luxurious atmosphere, with an amazing staff and team at Lexus South Pointe.  The multilevel, multicolored glass encased vehicle garage showcase, which you see in the commercials, are really something to marvel at.  Lexus South Pointe presents a level of style and class second to none.  Thank you for the opportunity to work together!

OVER 13,000 STUDENTS STRAIGHTEN UP!
A HUGE thank you goes out to over 50 schools across Alberta, and over 11,000 students on top of the 2,000 in attendance at Victoria School of the Arts who all tuned in for the first ever #SUA2013 world premiere and live broadcast!  We are completely enamored with the tremendous support for this community initiative brought to you by our wonderful clients, Alberta College and Association of Chiropractors.  We have seen SUA grow exponentially this year with the launch of the "Stretch Lee" custom theme song and music video, and we can't wait to see what the future holds for this "moving" message.  Thanks for Straightening Up Alberta, and thanks again to all our sponsors who helped make this event such a massive success!
