COMMUNITY WIDE CONTEST SEARCHES FOR VOICES AGAINST POVERTY
Back in 2002 I was pulling into the street of my home in my red Honda Prelude, when my friends and I noticed what looked to be a down and out shirtless man running up and down the street.  It was zero degrees outside.  As I pulled up, I realized that it was a 16 year old at-risk youth named Randy.  Rowena and I had worked 1 on 1 with Randy previously for close to 2 years.  He and his family had experienced extreme hardships and challenges living in poverty, living with mental illness, and battling drug addictions.  While working with Randy, Rowena and I had started a program called Soundz of Youth.  Through music, we kept at-risk youth off the streets, and brought them into the recording studio to share their experiences in meaningful and creative ways: through writing and recording their own songs. The recording studio became a safe haven for youth to have a voice, and share their stories of poverty to possibility.  At the end of each session, youth would proudly leave with their very own professionally produced CD to play for all their friends.

Randy had recently got out of jail and was placed  in another group home in Sherwood Park. He ran all the way from Sherwood Park, to my home recording studio at the time in Castledowns North Edmonton, just to "spit some new rhymes for me".  In that very moment, I realized the impact the power of music had made on this impressionable young man.  To this day, seeing the faces of these youth light up in the studio are the most fondest memories of working front line in Human Services.

Thanks to youth like Randy, "excited" cannot begin to describe how passionate we are to have launched the first ever search for the My United Way Voice against poverty.

We are honoured and grateful to have partnered with United Way of the Alberta Capital Region and HOT 107 on the first ever My United Way Voice contest.  On October 2nd we held a press conference at the PlanIt Sound Inc offices/studio amongst a room full of media and industry leaders launching the brand new contest to search for voices against poverty.  Spoken word artists, singers and rappers from across the Capital Region are being called on to submit a video of themselves singing a catchy hook, spitting rhymes or dropping and inspirational verse using the poverty theme.

The winner - decided by online community vote - will receive a prize package valued at $5,000 that includes professional coaching, studio recording time and a live performance in front of over 700 community leaders and supporters at United Way's annual campaign wrap-up, the Red Tie Gala on March 5, 2015.


The contest encourages original work by local artists, but can also be a cover tune that connects with the issue.  The goal of the project is to find the best voice against poverty and offer a showcase for the performance. Now open, the submission deadline is November 21, 2014. The top 5 submissions will be announced at myunitedwayvoice.ca on November 28, 2014 and then the contest will open to the community for online voting that will close on January 19, 2015.
